Arvind Thapliyal represents the modern disputes lawyer who combines rigorous preparation, persistence, commercial understanding, and practical advocacy to navigate complex, high-stakes matters. As a Partner at P&A Law Offices, he has represented Fortune 500 companies, multinational corporations, financial institutions, and government organizations before the Supreme Court, High Courts, tribunals, and leading arbitration forums including the ICC and LCIA. Recently empanelled as an arbitrator with the India International Arbitration Centre, Arvind brings the valuable perspective of someone who understands arbitration from both sides of the table.

In this episode of The Koffee Conversation Show – The Emerging Lawyer Series, themed “Beyond the Briefs: Arvind Thapliyal’s Journey in Arbitration & Advocacy,” Arvind shares powerful insights on arbitration, litigation, international disputes, commercial advocacy, client expectations, AI in legal practice, leadership, professional discipline, and the qualities required to build a lasting career in law. His perspective reinforces a powerful truth—excellent advocacy is built through preparation, persistence, continuous learning, and the ability to provide clients with practical and efficient solutions.

Arvind’s legal journey began in Mussoorie, before he moved to Delhi and joined Singh & Associates. His early years involved the demanding groundwork of inspecting files in district courts, observing how cases actually progressed, and understanding litigation from its most fundamental level. From there, he gradually progressed to High Courts, the Supreme Court, and eventually international arbitration. A defining milestone came when he joined a team representing an Indian conglomerate before the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), an experience that opened his perspective to international dispute resolution and strategic advocacy.

A defining aspect of Arvind’s professional philosophy is “industry”—persistence, diligence, and continuous effort. He believes there are no shortcuts to becoming an accomplished lawyer. His experience across construction disputes, forex derivatives, insolvency, banking, money laundering matters, and international arbitration has reinforced his belief that every complex case creates an opportunity to learn something new. As a leader, he emphasizes that pressure must be realistic and that success is always a team achievement, with senior lawyers responsible for supporting, guiding, and developing their juniors.
