Kanchan Nautiyal, Director – Transformation, CEO Office at GUS Global, is an accomplished technology and engineering professional with over 20 years of experience spanning ICT consulting, infrastructure programmes, project management and organisational transformation. An engineer with a master’s degree in Engineering in Fibre Optics and Wireless Communications from Toronto Metropolitan University, she has contributed to significant initiatives including Smart Cities and BharatNet, while also gaining international experience in North America and the MENA region. In this special episode of The Koffee Conversation Show – The Stree Shakti Series, Kanchan reflects on her journey across technology, leadership and transformation, and shares her perspective on building a more connected and future-ready world.
Born and brought up in a small town in Uttarakhand, Kanchan’s journey has been shaped by curiosity, adaptability and a willingness to embrace opportunities. After completing her B.Tech, she moved to Toronto to join her husband, pursued her master’s degree and began working with IBI Group’s engineering consulting team. She also obtained her Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) licence in Ontario. Returning to India in 2011, she rejoined the organisation and gradually progressed from engineering and project management into programme leadership and transformation. Her career was not built around a perfectly mapped plan; rather, each opportunity expanded her perspective. One of her most important realisations was that technical expertise alone is not enough to grow into leadership. Stakeholder management, communication, decision-making, team leadership and the ability to work across functions are equally important.

A particularly insightful part of the conversation explores the future of connectivity. Kanchan believes that technology infrastructure must be understood as an interconnected ecosystem involving fibre, satellite communication, subsea cables, data centres, energy, policy, investment and geopolitics. Explaining fibre and satellite connectivity through a relatable analogy, she describes fibre as a highway capable of carrying large volumes of traffic reliably, while satellite is like a helicopter that can reach remote or difficult locations where building physical infrastructure is challenging. She believes both technologies will complement each other rather than compete. Drawing from her experience with Smart Cities and BharatNet, she also highlights the importance of bridging the digital divide, improving ownership and strengthening accountability in infrastructure delivery. In her current transformation role, she sees organisational transformation as much more than introducing a new system or achieving a short-term target. It requires fundamental change in how an organisation works to deliver meaningful and lasting outcomes.
Beyond her professional achievements, Kanchan shares the experiences that have shaped her as a woman and a leader. Working in traditionally male-dominated engineering environments, travelling extensively for client meetings and balancing professional responsibilities with family life demanded resilience and determination. She credits her mother for teaching her stability, accountability and the importance of showing up for people. Her advice to women aspiring to leadership is to remain empathetic, find their own path rather than imitate others, and continue building a strong technical foundation. She also speaks about the importance of gratitude, which has become a daily journaling practice, and her renewed interest in ghazal writing, crafts and music. Describing herself as a lifelong learner, Kanchan’s message is powerful: women are already capable of more than they sometimes realise. They must keep reminding themselves of their inner strength, remain curious and continue growing.
