Abhishek Das, Head – Business Development at Poovayya & Co., represents a new-age professional at the intersection of legal education, business development, branding, design and strategic communication. A graduate of National Law University Odisha, Abhishek brings over seven years of experience in helping law firms communicate their expertise, build meaningful relationships and create opportunities for sustainable growth. In this episode of The Koffee Conversation Show – The Emerging Lawyer, he shares how his journey moved beyond the conventional legal career path to explore the business and creative dimensions of the legal industry.
Abhishek’s professional journey has been shaped by several defining experiences. His involvement in organising a TEDx event at law school introduced him to design, event planning, networking and communication. His subsequent experience at Economic Laws Practice gave him exposure to law firm business development, including database development, social media campaigns, pitches, RFPs and analytics. He also credits his experience working with Ashutosh Gupta at HSA for instilling in him the principle that “God is in the details.” Later, supporting four directors as a junior team member at IndusLaw challenged him to take ownership, adapt quickly and develop a broad understanding of the business of law.

For Abhishek, effective legal business development begins with understanding people, not selling services. A successful pitch requires an understanding of the client’s business, operating model, industry landscape and priorities. It must communicate a clear value proposition, present relevant expertise, use credible testimonials, identify the right legal team, establish relationship accountability and provide transparency around pricing and matter management. He believes that storytelling makes legal expertise more meaningful by showing clients why it matters. At the same time, law firm branding must respect professional boundaries, confidentiality and accuracy. Communication should educate and demonstrate expertise rather than promise outcomes or make exaggerated promotional claims.
The conversation also explores the evolving role of technology, AI and personal branding in the legal ecosystem. Abhishek believes that a strong professional brand is built through credibility, consistency and authenticity, with visibility supported by substance. Technology can help law firms organise relationships, research markets, track engagement and understand client interests, but it should strengthen professional judgement rather than replace it. Beyond his professional life, Abhishek shares a deeply personal story of resilience. Having lost his right eye in infancy and experienced bullying during childhood, he found confidence and expression through art, music, dance and creativity. His journey is a reminder that challenges need not define our limitations; they can become the foundation for discovering our strengths and building something meaningful.
