Ethelwald Mendes is a seasoned maritime litigator, respected arbitrator, and powerful voice in the global mediation community. With over three decades of international experience across Goa, Singapore, Paris, Brisbane, Copenhagen and beyond, he has shaped conversations on dispute resolution across borders. A former trade union leader at Mormugao Port Trust, he built his career from the docks to international arbitration forums, handling complex admiralty cases, shipping disputes, and global commercial conflicts.

Known for blending legal precision with deep human empathy, he champions appropriate dispute resolution, advancing mediation as a transformative tool in the maritime sector. Ethelwald is also a board member of INADR (International Negotiation & Dispute Resolution)—and notably, the only Asian on the board. His journey reflects passion, resilience, global exposure, and a lifelong romance with the sea.

Ethelwald’s story begins in Goa, growing up around the maritime world through his family’s work at Mormugao Port. His early years as a trade union leader exposed him to real-world issues faced by seafarers, laying the foundation for a future in admiralty and shipping law. After completing his Master’s in Law, he stepped into independent practice—leveraging port connections, international trade networks, and mining contracts to build a thriving maritime practice.

From arrests of vessels to cross-border arbitrations in Singapore, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, his career has been defined by global exposure and complex cross-jurisdictional challenges. Over the years, he evolved from a litigator to a facilitator, advocating mediation as a powerful, culturally adaptive solution—especially after witnessing the limits of courtroom processes in international disputes.

Beyond his legal accomplishments, Ethelwald is deeply spiritual, values-driven, and anchored by family. He carries fond memories of Goa’s sunshine, music, faith, and food—and continues to nurture young talent through maritime moots and mentorship. Today, he splits his time between Goa and Copenhagen (where his daughter works with Maersk), continuing to push for maritime law education, better dispute resolution systems, and stronger mediation culture in India.
