Jharna Jagtiani, Assistant Dean at Vinayaka Mission’s Law School (VMLS), is a certified mediator, startup consultant, and leadership mentor whose career bridges law, emotional intelligence, and education design. With over a decade of diverse experience spanning HR, legal education, and corporate training, she has redefined what it means to teach law with heart and purpose.

Her sessions blend structure with storytelling, reflection with rigor — nurturing a generation of lawyers who think deeply, communicate clearly, and lead with compassion. Whether she’s guiding law students, training corporate professionals, or mentoring young leaders, Jharna stands out for her clarity, empathy, and calm authority. Her mantra — “Be present, not perfect” — perfectly captures the grace and intentionality she brings to every role.

Jharna’s journey is one of passion meeting purpose — a seamless blend of intellect, intuition, and impact. Raised in a values-driven home that prized kindness and clarity, she learned early that compassion is not weakness, but power in its quietest form.

After earning her law degree from K.C. Law College, Mumbai, Jharna pursued her post-graduation from Maharashtra National Law University, where her exposure to mediation and conflict resolution became a defining chapter in her career. Her experiences led her to integrate law with psychology, communication, and leadership, reshaping the traditional idea of legal education.

Today, at VMLS, Jharna leads the Office of Career Services, bridging the gap between classrooms and careers. She’s on a mission to transform law schools into spaces where students don’t just learn the law — they learn to listen, reflect, and lead.

She is also the founder of The Prerna Foundation, a social impact initiative that began with mediation awareness programs and evolved into a full-fledged platform for skill development, youth mentoring, and legal literacy across India. Her work embodies what she teaches — to make justice and opportunity accessible, inclusive, and human.

Key Highlights of Koffee Conversation with Jharna Jagtiani:

  • Jharna reflected on her multi-faceted journey as a mediator, educator, and trainer — describing how each role is tied together by a single calling: empowering people with clarity and compassion.
  • She spoke about storytelling and role play as transformative tools in legal education, helping students move beyond theory into emotional understanding and ethical reflection.
  • Drawing from her mediation background, she explained how negotiation isn’t just about tactics but self-awareness — knowing what triggers you, what silence teaches, and how empathy resolves more than arguments.
  • Her favorite workshop, “Career Anchors & Inner Compass,” helps final-year students pause, reflect, and define success on their own terms — a rare and powerful exercise in a results-driven world.
  • Jharna emphasized that Gen Z lawyers are not afraid to ask “why,” and that mentors must evolve — from giving answers to holding space for inquiry.
  • On her mother’s influence, she shared: “Her belief in me was never loud — it was steady. She taught me that if you feel called to it, it’s not a mistake, it’s your path.”
  • She passionately discussed the need for balance between doctrinal law and the human side of law, highlighting VMLS’s focus on simulation-based learning, peer-led modules, and career readiness labs.
  • Through Prerna Foundation, she continues her advocacy for mediation and youth skill-building — transforming it into a platform for dialogue, development, and dignity.
  • Personally, Jharna opened up about her rituals before teaching, her love for The Art of Gathering by Priya Parker, her peaceful escapes to Mahabalipuram beach, and her affection for vada sambar — her everyday comfort food.
  • Her childhood story about returning a lost ₹100 note captured her core value: integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.
  • She defined her leadership style as “compassion with clarity” — equal parts discipline and empathy.
  • On the future of legal education, she envisioned law schools as ecosystems — where students collaborate, experiment, and grow into conscious citizens, not just competent lawyers.
  • Her 2025 goal? To strengthen the bridge between industry and academia while publishing her first major body of written work.
