Arunima Roy represents the modern in-house lawyer who goes beyond traditional legal advisory to become a strategic business enabler, trusted adviser, and ethical leader. As Senior Compliance Counsel at Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Ltd., her career reflects the evolving role of corporate lawyers across governance, compliance, commercial advisory, technology, and strategic decision-making. Her philosophy is rooted in finding the “yes” within the four corners of the law—helping businesses move forward responsibly rather than simply telling them what they cannot do.

In this episode of The Koffee Conversation Show – The Emerging Lawyer Series, themed “How Modern Lawyers Drive Business Success,” Arunima shares powerful insights on in-house legal leadership, business partnering, compliance, AI, LegalTech, global regulations, mentorship, resilience, ethics, and the future of corporate law. Her perspective highlights a critical truth—modern lawyers must understand the business language as deeply as they understand the language of law.

Arunima’s defining career moment came during her university years when she participated in a legal aid camp for rural women nearly 300 kilometres from Kolkata. Listening to women who were unaware of their legal rights made her realize that justice is meaningful only when people have the awareness and resources to access it. That experience strengthened her passion for law and shaped her commitment to using legal knowledge as a tool for empowerment.

A major transformation in her career came in 2013, when she moved from a unit-level statutory compliance role into a pan-India corporate profile. Suddenly, her responsibilities extended across manufacturing, mining, marketing, medical facilities, hospitals, and airports, while also involving reporting of non-compliances to the board. She credits resilience, a growth mindset, continuous learning, and mentorship for helping her navigate this transition. Her leadership style today is strongly inclusive—she takes responsibility when things go wrong while ensuring her team receives the recognition when things go right.
