Ankit Bhasin, Partner at IC RegFin Legal Partners LLP, has built his career at the intersection of venture capital, private equity, mergers and acquisitions, fundraising and corporate advisory. Featured in The Emerging Lawyer Series of The Koffee Conversation Show, Ankit reflects on his journey from NLU Delhi to AZB, independent practice and his role in a growing law firm. His professional experience highlights how transactional lawyers can evolve into strategic advisors by combining legal expertise with commercial awareness, business understanding and the ability to navigate complex relationships.

Ankit’s early years at AZB helped him develop professional discipline, adaptability and the ability to take responsibility in demanding situations. His subsequent experience in independent practice gave him a different perspective on the profession, requiring him to rely on his own judgement and recognise both his strengths and areas for improvement. Later, being part of a law firm’s growth journey offered him the opportunity to contribute to an evolving organisation and understand the responsibilities that accompany professional growth.

Working with venture capital funds, private equity investors, startup founders and corporates has taught Ankit that effective transaction management requires more than knowing the law. Investors and founders often approach a deal with different expectations, constraints and levels of experience. Ankit believes that a lawyer’s value lies in identifying problems early, developing practical solutions and planning a transaction from beginning to closure. Understanding the people on both sides of the table is equally important, as their concerns, priorities and expectations can significantly influence negotiations and outcomes.

For Ankit, sustainable business growth begins with strong legal foundations. He encourages startups to make compliance a habit rather than treating it as a last-minute exercise before fundraising or due diligence. His work with technology-driven businesses has also reinforced the importance of understanding the industry behind each transaction, particularly as AI and deep-tech ventures evolve. While he is actively observing and experimenting with legal AI tools, he recognises that different tools serve different purposes. His advice to young lawyers extends beyond legal knowledge: develop emotional intelligence, communication skills, technological awareness and the ability to work effectively with others. Above all, he believes in focusing on the quality of one’s work rather than chasing money, trusting that professional excellence creates lasting opportunities.
