Rahim Shamji, Founder and CEO of ADR ODR International, has built a remarkable professional journey across barrister practice, mediation, negotiation, digital dispute resolution, education and entrepreneurship. His experience also includes working with the Civil Mediation Council, serving as a barrister at Gatehouse Chambers and developing expertise in digital dispute resolution. His journey reflects a powerful combination of traditional legal thinking with the evolving possibilities of technology and alternative dispute resolution.

Rahim’s relationship with mediation began in 2005, after several years of legal practice, when he started questioning the idea that disputes should primarily be resolved through courts. For him, mediation represented an opportunity to bring humanity back into dispute resolution. This philosophy eventually led him toward digital dispute resolution, where he believes technology should make processes more efficient without taking away human intelligence, party autonomy and meaningful human connection.

A central theme of his conversation on The Koffee Conversation Show – The Emerging Lawyer was the need to broaden the legal professional’s toolbox. Rahim believes courts, arbitration, mediation, conciliation and adjudication each have their place, depending on the nature of the dispute. He sees the next generation of legal professionals as increasingly multidisciplinary—combining legal knowledge with mediation, negotiation, technology and AI.

His perspective on AI is equally human-centred. Rahim believes AI and mediation have already come together and that technology can improve efficiency and reach. Yet he cautions against allowing AI to replace human thinking. The ability to understand emotions, read a room, recognize hesitation and connect deeply with another human being remains fundamental to mediation. For Rahim, the future is not about choosing between humans and technology, but using technology while preserving the humanity at the heart of peacemaking.
